Moore County Children and our Goal

  • By the end of the 2014-2015 school year, 63.6% of Moore County third graders met grade level reading requirements and were reading on grade level.
  • Our goal is to have 100% reading on grade level by 2020.

What We are Doing

  • As a community, we recognize that we need to work together to make sure all of our children learn to read to succeed in school.
  • Together, over 20 community partners created Southern Pines Grows Great Readers in 2011, a plan to increase opportunities, remove barriers, help parents, and support our schools.
  • For this plan, the National Civic League named Southern Pines a 2012 All-America City.
  • In 2016, building upon the success in Southern Pines, the campaign expanded to a county-wide focus, bringing together a wider array of voices and ideas to help grow readers across Moore County.
