[ARCHIVED] Community Resources Available to Help Manage Power Outage

NC Strong

DECEMBER 6, 2022 UPDATE

Once again, we’d like to first offer our sincere gratitude to the outpouring of support that is coming in for our Southern Pines residents, small businesses, and staff. So many who are inside our community but also in other areas have mobilized to help the Moore County community. Our Town staff has focused on receiving and directing resources into the community with support from the Moore Chamber of Commerce, who have been instrumental securing resources from all across North Carolina.

If you’ve felt that we blew up your social media feed today, you’re right and we’re glad you saw our updates! While that was intentional today, hopefully you know that’s not typical and won’t unfollow us! We wanted to push resources out to you as soon as we learned of them, so you could take advantage of them right away, like the jackets available for free at our Coalition Resale Shop or the cases of water at the E.S. Douglass Community Center.

We received a very positive update from Duke Energy this evening, which stated, “Duke Energy is currently ahead of schedule on substation repairs in Moore County. Barring any unforeseen setback, we believe we can begin gradually bringing service back online for customers Wednesday afternoon. We anticipate nearly all Moore County customers will be restored before midnight Wednesday. As of 3:00 p.m. today, more than 10,000 customers have been restored as crews continue working 24-hour shifts to make repairs and restore service to all impacted customers.” We’re so happy for our neighbors in Carthage and we hope Southern Pines and southern Moore County will join you with lights and heat late tomorrow night!

We have some important resources that we want you to know will be available tomorrow, Wednesday, December 7:

HOT MEALS

The American Red Cross of the Sandhills of North Carolina@ will provide lunch on Wednesday from 12:30-2:30pm at the Morganton Park Sports Complex, 190 Fire Lane.

Baptists On Mission disaster relief volunteers will serve lunch on Wednesday from 11:30am-2pm. Food trucks will be set up in the lower parking lot of First Baptist Church, Southern Pines, NC at May Street and E. New York Avenue, across from Moore Montessori. Thanks to a generous and coordinated effort between FBCSP and Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, these meals will be provided for free. All are welcome!

The Baptists on Mission volunteers will also set up their mobile shower units and laundry units in the grassy lot at the corner of East New York Avenue and Ashe Street. They will be available for use on Wednesday from 8:15 am until 7pm. There is no charge for this service, with one laundry load per family.

The local food trucks at Red's Corner remain open, selling lunch and dinner (and limited breakfast).

SUPPLIES
Southern Pines Parks and Recreation staff will continue to distribute cases of water donated by Pepsi at the E.S. Douglass Community Center, 1185 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, from 9am until noon. We have also distributed these pallets of water to other parts of the community that are distributing food and supplies.

The Southern Pines Public Library will again be open from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday, December 7. We will not be functioning as a library, but rather invite the community to come for a warm building with lights, WiFi, and to charge phones or use electrical devices. We will have board games available for an escape from reality and some snacks and warm drinks. The community has generously donated snacks and drinks for this effort, plus essential supplies like baby wipes, diapers, hand warmers, and similar.

Sam's Club, through a donation coordinated by the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, has provided blankets, flashlights with batteries, and baby wipes. These supplies have been sent to Trinity AME Zion Church at 972 W. Pennsylvania Avenue for distribution.

POWER & SHELTER OPPORTUNITIES

The Haney Community Room and lobby of the Southern Pines Police Department at 450 W. Pennsylvania Ave. remains open indefinitely 24/7 to the public in order to charge electrical devices, use WiFi, and get out of the cold.

AT&T has loaned two mobile charging stations to Southern Pines. These are set up in the police station and the library.

Moore County’s emergency shelter remains open at the Moore County Sportsplex in Carthage and will remain open until further notice. It is located at 155 Hillcrest Park Lane, off of N.C. 22, near the intersection with U.S. 15-501.
