Early Childhood Programs
Baby Rhymes
Baby Rhymes is specially designed for the youngest learners (birth-2) and their caregivers. Repetition and comforting movements make this storytime perfect for early development and brain growth. Tuesdays at 10:15 am, with a duplicate session at 10:45 a.m. An active library card is required for this program.
Music and Motion
Does your 2-4 year old like to move and groove? Join us for Music and Motion to get those wiggles out! Thursdays at 10:15 am and 10:45 am. An active library card is required for this program.
Little U
Little U is the Southern Pines Public Library's preschool program for children ages 3.5 to 5 years old. Join us on Thursdays at 3:45 pm for stories, songs, rhymes, and activities that explore the world of books, language, and literacy. Little U is a fun and interactive program designed to help preschoolers develop early literacy skills in preparation for kindergarten and beyond! An active library card is required for this program.
Saturday Storytime
Saturday Storytime is our once-a-month weekend program for children from birth to age 5 and their caregivers. Join us at the library at 10:15 a.m. for Saturday morning stories, songs, rhymes, and smiles where caregivers and young children can interact and explore the fun of language and early literacy. A library card is not required to attend this program. See library calendar for specific, once-a-month dates.
SPARK Storytime
SPARK Storytime is our once-a-month outreach program at the Southern Pines Fire Station #2, 7850 NC-22, Carthage. Typically held on the second Friday once a month at 10 a.m., this storytime is designed for children from birth to age 5 and their caregivers. Repetition, rhymes, movement, and storytelling make this a perfect activity for early growth and development. A library card is not required to attend this program. Check library calendar for specific, once-a-month dates.
Learn & Play at the Library
Come in for an open play date with your toddler or preschooler from 10am until 12pm on Wednesdays. There will be developmental toys and puzzles as well as early literacy tips on display for parents and caregivers to incorporate into their daily activities.
Children's Programs
At The Library After School (ATLAS)
ATLAS is an after-school program for K-2nd graders. Perfect for kids who still enjoy listening to stories and can participate in brief, small-group discussion. Supplies for a related activity will be provided and can be worked on at your own pace within the children’s area or brought home. Check our Program Calendar for upcoming dates.
STEAM Sunday
Elementary-aged children and their caregivers are invited to explore topics in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Participate in STEAM projects and activities that you can recreate at home. Held monthly on a Sunday at 2:30 pm. Please check our Program Calendar for upcoming dates and topics.
ecoEXPLORE
ecoEXPLORE is a program for kids in K-8th grade that encourages them to make scientific observations in a fun way. Using smartphones or tablets, kids can make observations that scientists can use in their own research and also earn points and prizes at the same time! As a LoanSpot, the Southern Pines Public Library offers Loanpacks, which are filled with nature science equipment. Patrons can check out these backpacks to assist them in making observations. Writer’s Group
Calling writers and illustrators: Are you interested in creating fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or comics? Come to the Sunday Afternoon Writing Group! Connect with other writers and artists, chat about your craft, and get feedback about your work. All levels welcome. Writer's Group meets one Sunday per month from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Southern Pines Public Library. To join, email lholden@sppl.net.
